How much does an eye exam cost without insurance?

At Advanced Vision Care Center, a comprehensive eye exam is $95 self-pay. For new patients, the complete eye exam and contact lens fitting is $160 total self-pay, including diagnostic trial lenses, first-time wearer training and unlimited fitting follow-ups within 30 days of receiving the trial lenses. These fees are the same at our Aurora, Greensburg and Richmond offices. Eyewear, ongoing contact lens supplies and additional diagnostic testing or treatment can cost extra.
What the $95 comprehensive eye exam includes
The $95 self-pay fee is for a comprehensive eye exam, including assessment of your vision and eye health. Screening retinal photos and OCT scans are included for patients ages 25 and older. There is no separate charge for those included screening images.
Eyewear, contact lens fitting and additional testing are separate from this $95 offer. Included screening imaging is different from additional diagnostic testing for an eye-health concern. For example, a visual-field test or a diagnostic scan to investigate or monitor a condition may be recommended at another visit and have a separate charge.

What the $160 new-patient contact lens package includes
The $160 is the total self-pay price for the new-patient eye exam and contact lens fitting, not a fitting fee added to a $95 exam. It includes diagnostic trial lenses, including additional trial sets when needed to reach the appropriate vision outcome.
First-time contact lens wearers receive insertion, removal and care instruction, including additional training sessions when needed. Unlimited fitting follow-ups are included within 30 days of receiving the trial lenses. Your ongoing supply of contact lenses is purchased separately. After the 30-day window, the office may apply an additional $35 fee.

Returning patients and fitting-only visits
Returning patients whose previous AVCC exam was within three years may have a fitting-only visit for $35. A comprehensive exam is $95. These describe different visits; the $35 fitting-only fee is not the price of a comprehensive exam.
Tell the office what you need and when you last had an AVCC exam. The office will determine whether a fitting-only visit is appropriate and explain its scope. Do not assume it includes the same trial, training and follow-up package as a new-patient visit.

Keep the cost of glasses and ongoing contact lens supplies separate from the clinical fee. The diagnostic trial lenses included in the $160 package are not the same as the ongoing supply you purchase after fitting.
Medical testing and treatment depend on your needs. Additional services are usually performed at another visit and may have separate charges. If another test or treatment is recommended, ask what it is for, when it is needed and what cost to expect. A medical eye-care visit should not be assumed to have the same fee as a routine $95 comprehensive exam.

Keep a written cost estimate
Save the office name, visit description and any discussed inclusions or possible additional charges. If you have insurance, ask about your exact plan, the service, the doctor and the office before assuming which benefits apply.
CMS explains that people who are uninsured or not using insurance can usually get a good faith estimate when they request one or schedule care at least three business days ahead. It describes expected charges; it is not a bill or a guarantee of the final amount. Emergency care is an exception. Ask the office about the estimate process for your situation.

Allow about 30–45 minutes for a comprehensive exam or 45–60 minutes for a contact lens visit. These are planning ranges, not guaranteed finishing times. Training, dilation or other needs can affect your plans, and contact lens fitting may require follow-up visits.
Choose the AVCC office in Aurora, Greensburg or Richmond that works for you. Call or send an appointment request to discuss your visit. The office still needs to confirm the date and time; sending a request does not book an appointment.

No. $160 is the total self-pay price for the complete new-patient eye exam and contact lens fitting. It includes diagnostic trial lenses, first-time wearer training and unlimited fitting follow-ups within 30 days of receiving the trial lenses.
Are retinal photos and OCT included in the $95 exam?
Screening retinal photos and OCT scans are included in the comprehensive exam for patients ages 25 and older. Additional diagnostic testing or treatment may have a separate charge. If you are under 25, ask the office about imaging for your particular visit.
Does the exam price include glasses or a supply of contacts?
Glasses and your ongoing contact lens supply are separate purchases. Diagnostic trial lenses are included in the $160 new-patient exam-and-fitting package.
Can I use medical insurance if I do not have a vision plan?
Possibly, depending on your visit and exact benefits. Having no separate vision plan does not determine whether a medical eye evaluation is covered. Ask the office and insurer to check your service, plan, doctor and office.
